Peri-implantitis & failing implants

Peri-implantitis & failing implants

Peri-implantitis is the destruction of the gum tissue and bone around the implant. It can occur around implants due to bacterial accumulation or other factors, such as cement or debris left under the gum tissue. It usually presents as inflamed, red and often puffy gums with bleeding while brushing or flossing.

Other symptoms may include:

  •  visible infection around the implant

  •  persistent bad breath

  •  painful gums

  •  exposure of the implant threads

If not treated, it can lead to failure (loss) of the implant and/or further bone loss.

As a ‘gum specialist’ a periodontist is the most qualified clinician to treat peri-implantitis and our office has several options for such treatment to restore your implant back to health.  From conservative procedures such as airpolishing and  perioscopy, or for more involved cases,  utilizing non-invasive laser surgery such as LAPIP ™ and  open flap surgery with bone grafting, we have options to restore your implant back to health for the majority of cases.

We  will recommend and demonstrate effective homecare tools to prevent future issues and work with you to maintain your implant/s. An implant is an investment in your oral health &  lifestyle,  and should be maintained regularly.
