If you are being treated with LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Protocol) you will need to be on a modified diet for approximately 10 days.
This starts as a liquid only diet which transitions to mushy, then soft foods over several days following surgery, and it is all for a simple and very important reason - to protect the clot! At the end of the laser treatment, a very thin clot is formed around each tooth which keeps bacteria out and allows your body to start regenerating bone. It is a barrier between the external environment and your body and vital in the success of the treatment. If these clots are removed, it can affect the success of the treatment and ultimately prevent your body from regenerating bone in those areas.
Below are some suggestions on what you can drink/eat following LANAP.
The first 3 days following LANAP
If you have a blender at home, this is the time to give it some serious use! During the initial healing phase you may see a very fine red line around the teeth which will turn white as you are healing. This is the most critical time period during which you can only consume smooth liquids (do not use a straw as this will create suction and may remove the clot). Avoid very hot temperatures, spicy liquids and any type of seeds.
Broth or chicken broth
Miso broth
Smoothies
Smooth soups (tomatoes, butternut squash, blended vegetable soup, potato leek soup)
Coffee, tea, herbal teas
Hot (warm) cocoa
Ice cream - yes ice cream! ( As long as it does not have any added nuts or mix-ins)
Juices - if making your own, avoid strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, kiwi, chia seeds, flax seeds due to the sees which can disrupt the clot
Protein Drinks
Homemade protein shakes with added protein powder
Meal replacement drinks such as Ensure or Boost
Milk - plain and flavored
Electrolyte drinks such as Gatorade, Pedialyte
Coconut water
Yogurt drinks or kefir
Plenty of water - stay hydrated!
The next 3-4 days following LANAP
You can start incorporating ‘mushy’ foods. Again you should avoid very hot temperatures, spicy or hard foods and all seeds.
A good rule of thumb during the ‘mushy’ & ‘soft’ food healing phases — if it crunches, cracks or leaves crumbs, it's not for you just yet. Choose foods that are soft, moist and easy to chew. We will let you know at your post-operative appointment when you can return to your normal diet.
Soft pasta
Cottage cheese
Yogurt (Greek or Regular)
Scrambled or boiled (broken up) eggs
Refried beans
Soft, cooked vegetables such as mashed potato, mashed sweet potato, zucchini
Hummus
Tofu (soft)
Cream of wheat
Polenta
Avocado (mashed)
Pudding
Custard
Mousse
Jell-o
Applesauce, mashed bananas
The last 3-4 days following LANAP
At this time you can also start eating soft foods.
Soft, flaky fish - white fish such as Cod, Tilapia
Tofu (firm)
Pasta
Well cooked rice
Macaroni and cheese
Well cooked beans or lentils
Pancakes
Crepes
Include any of the mushy foods
