Most patients tolerate LANAP very well and have minimal discomfort following the procedure. Please follow the instructions carefully so you will gain the maximum effectiveness of the treatment. Do not hesitate to contact our office if you have any questions that are not covered below.
Do not be alarmed if you have:
Color changes or changing appearance of gum tissue following laser therapy. The gum tissue may turn gray, yellow, red, blue, purple and appear ‘stringy’ which all reflect normal responses to laser treatment
Mild swelling
Slight bleeding
Some slight tenderness/sensitive teeth
These are temporary and typically only noticeable for the first several days. The use of warm salt water rinses can help your gums feel better and aid in healing (mix 8 ounces of warm water with a teaspoon of salt and gently swish).
To keep any possible swelling to a minimum, gently place an ice pack on the outside of your face for 20 minutes each hour until you go to bed that night. Use this only for the day of treatment.
If needed, you can take Tylenol or ibuprofen over the next several days. It is best to avoid strenuous exercise over the next 24-48 hours but you will be able to continue day to day activities immediately following surgery.
If you are currently wearing a night guard, continue to wear this.
If Dr Herron has prescribed any medication such as antibiotics, please take exactly as directed for the stated number of days.
PLEASE CALL OUR OFFICE if you experience any of the following:
Prolonged or severe pain
Prolonged or excessive bleeding
Considerable or persistent fever
Sores on the roof of your mouth (blisters)
LANAP Oral Hygiene instructions
This is the one time we will tell you not to brush or floss! This refers to the treated areas and for the initial healing phase. This is to ensure the clot remains in place. You can gently swish with mouthrinse (non-alcohol) or salt water rinses. Do not use a water flosser for 3 months. We will let you know at subsequent appointments such as your post-operative appointment and first periodontal maintenance when you can resume brushing, flossing and other homecare tools.
LANAP Dietary Protocol
You will be on a liquid diet for the next 3 days and continue with mushy & soft foods for the next 7-10 days. Please see our LANAP Dietary Protocol page for specific instructions and meal replacement ideas.
Smokers/Tobacco Users Warning
Tobacco has a significant effect on your gums and gum (periodontal) disease. It is associated with an increased disease rate in terms of oral bone loss and gum health. Tobacco is a major factor for chronic periodontal disease.
Any type of smoking, vaping and/or chewing tobacco will have an adverse effect on the progress of your healing and possible treatment response. If you are a smoker, vaper or chew tobacco, we highly recommend not to do so while you are healing or any time after this.
